This movie is one of my favorites; a spoof on characters/people who belong to the world of sport dancing; as in other "hobbies" and sports, so serious, so reliant on rules and acceptance and winning to the point of denying individuality, talent, and freedom of expression. Iconic character types, a cult-type classic that I've watched many times until my tape wore out and I needed to replace it with a DVD. Love the paso doble that the two young people perform; old style, traditional dance, with verve and passion and youthful energy and expression, with the charming addition of a budding romance. I don't know any of the actors, so can't say they were perfectly cast; but every one of them seemed authentic and true to character. A timeless movie that I will watch time and again.

Absolutely delightful and engaging movie. Great storyline and script, talented cast, super sharp camera work and soundtrack, top notch set deck and costumes.. Director Baz Luhrmann's early work will put a smile on your face.

This movie is sooooo funny and cute and really just a feel good family movie! With a side of romance and makes you want to get up and dance of course. The humor is so real-life like with the sarcarsm we live with every day. It has something for everyone no matter your personality. The characters do a great job at the audience getting to know them and to care and like them. The different cultures of australian and spain/portugese mix is fun. It's a refreshing comedy that is so welcomed. This movie was made in the 1990's however, even today in 2011, it holds up to making me laugh, shoot for the underdog, dance, cry, yell and of course dance some more. After this we should appreciate life and laugh at ourselves and it can bring us down a knotch if we are too stressed. Remember a life lived in fear, is a life half lived. What do you think? It was in the movie.....let's dance!Read full review
This is one of my all time favorite movies, one I watch even when it's on regular tv, cut to pieces. It goes from the sublime to the ridiculous and pretty much stays there for 90% of the time, but it's a fun, musical ridiculous, with plenty of songs I enjoy hearing over and over. Plus Paul Mercurio dances like a dream - too bad he's gone more into choreography nowadays. He's missed on the big screen. (Of course, EXIT TO EDEN might have had something to do with sinking his career a bit... =) Trivia: Paul Mercurio 'choreographed' the movements for the robots in I, ROBOT. One of the best scenes is when his character's taught how to do the Paso Doble as it was intended. The man teaching him is the man who choreographed it for the movie, a truly great dancer in his own right. And the girl playing Fran, a non-dancer in real life, learned all the dances just for this film. If you want a mostly fun, frivolous evening with plenty of dancing in it, this is one to watch.Read full review
When this film first came out, I saw it over and over. There is only the slightest problem with the Aussie accent, when one might become confused between who is being referred to when it comes to "Les" and "Liz," because they come out sounding the same when spoken. But this is a charmer, with sometimes over the top outrageous comedy -- but each time I see it I notice something new. Just bought a copy for a friend, to pass it on, and reviewed it twice... and still love it so many years later. The characters are completely captivating, crazy, and loveable, and sometimes wacky/nasty. And the dancing is just great. A really uplifting, "clean," and super feel-good film, through and through.
