One of the mounts is a must if you use the Lansky sharpening system. They keep the clamp in good control and make it so much easier. I purchased this mount and attached it to a 12"X`12" board that I set in my lap and sharpen our knives while watching TV in the evenings. The mount is well made and quite sturdy. You can remove the pedestal for storage which may be handy for some people, but it's not a feature I use. This is why I gave it 4 stars. For my usage the plastic mount would have worked just as well and is a bit less expensive This is not a short coming of the mount in any way, just not something I personally find useful.

I should have read more reviews on this clamp before buying it, my mistake. Normally I due my research and rarely have buyers remorse, however this time I didn't and I'm disappointed. This stand is so close to being good and perhaps some are, just not mine. The fit and finish are terrible and the design is flawed. First off is the post, which simply treads into the base without a nut or something to keep it from backing out. Thus, while using the clamp it will turn and unthread itself from the base... No good. Second, the top of the post is not the correct diameter. It doesn't fit snuggly into the clamp and allows for a lot of wiggle room. It should also be longer, as it only goes into the clamps halfway as opposed to both pieces. This allows for a lot of wobbling and is just all around sloppy. I would not recommend this product, nor would I buy it again. Love my lansky, however... the mount/stand is horrible.Read full review

This mount helps to hold your knife/clamp so you don't have to hold it yourself. I screwed my mount to a small board that is then clamped to my workbench. But the mount isn't all that stable. I expected to have to hold the mount, but you really have to hold to eliminate the rocking that occurs. This appears to be due do the loose fit of the knife/clamp to the mount post. Also, the mount post screws into the mount base. And this continues to come loose. I fixed this by adding a thin lock washer between the mount base and post. Would have been nice if the mount included this washer. Also, I had to drill a hole in the board I screwed the mount to because the screw from the mount post was longer than the base height. So the mount wouldn't sit flush on any surface. Again, hot a huge deal, but I can't believe the mount design didn't take this into account. Overall, the mount helps with sharpening. But be prepared that it won't be as stable as it could be, and you might have to address issues when affixing the mount and using it.Read full review

I bought my first sharpening system a few months ago. I must say, the universal mount makes the lansky sharpening system worth owning. knowing what I know now I would never purchase a manual sharpening system without a base.

Good way to sharpen knife with Lansky knife sharpener system. Holds the blade holder well and acts as a third hand when sharpening knives. I mounted mine to a piece o& wood to make it more stable since it’s very light in weight.
