Martin Gilbert is simply an amazing historian. This is his comprehensive day-by-day account of the war, covering all fronts. I would have liked more coverage of Africa and the Japanese actions, but its scope is still amazing. It reads well, and has a great deal of personal touches. The British soldiers wrote a lot of poetry; you can find it here. Gilbert also follows individuals - sometimes one will win a medal in one chapter and be killed 60 pages later. If you want to learn about this overlooked war (its sequel tends to get much greater attention), you will love this book.
Very detailed reading. Writer did exhaustive documentation writing this book.
