Kiyoshi Kurosawa makes films that are very philosophical, very creepy and very Japanese. They are horror films for adult intellectuals in a sense. Not so much a thrill a minute emotional manipulation, but rather slowly paced and methodical emotional manipulation full of carefully crafted images and symbolism, taking its time to tell a story and make its point and requiring an attempt to understand Japanese psychology to appreciate it fully. You will find yourself contemplating the meaning/moral of the story and trying to put together the puzzle long after the movie is over. These are must-watch-it-again movies. Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a Japanese film-maker making Japanese language films in Japan for Japanese people and he is a master at his art. I highly recommend his movies.
