If you know McPhee...this is classic writing for him. It is a blend of field research (read into that--standing on a shore flipping lures for shad) with historical and technical background. The book explores everything from the biology of the shad to its historical role in American culture, and it does so without bogging down...which is quite an accomplishment. The book is never overly-technical, but informative enough fill pretty much anyone's head with a lot of information they never knew before. If you're a fisherman, American history buff, fan of McPhee or any of the above I would recommend this book to you.
The book arrived in excellent shape. Delivery was fast and can't complain about the price.

A classic book about shad and shad fishing. The book's only drawback is the lack of an index. It needs one because there is so much information that it is difficult to find if you want to go back to it. I bought the book because I own a museum dedicated to shad(HADDAM SHAD MUSEUM), and I am a shad fisherman.
