This is a hard-to-find movie, which is a shame as it is miles ahead of the usual Hollywood dross. Archbishop Romero became an example for El Salvador, and the movie captures his growth from a passive academic, who the power structure viewed as malleable, to a voice for the disenfranchised, for which he paid with his life, being gunned down by a government hit-squad in his cathedral. The late Raul Julia does a tremendous job in the title role, and director John Duigan doee a credible job of using authentic peasants rather than actors to evoke the Salvadoran population. What has always remained with me, as well, is the haunting use of the helicopter rotor sound at times of tension. If you can find a copy of this movie and especially if you have children who are in search of a praiseworthy example of integrity, buy it without reservation! *****Read full review
