I spent 3 days trying to download the latest maps, I had been sent a bad usb cable, once I purchased a new usb cable everything worked great. I really like the nuvi and it is easy to use and it seems very useful.

the voice command is almost useless. i speak very plainly and it very seldom gets the command right. this is the reason that i bought two of this unit and am not satisfied with the quality. the directions also are off by 1 to 2 tenths of a mile in some cases. dont know what causes this but it is troublesome.

I bought this mainly to navigate from freeway to my destination (in city) but after playing with it the entire trip I think I will enjoy it even more. On the way to visit my daughter I set it for 'fastest time' but on the return I set it for shortest distance. Because I knew the area somewhat I could have aborted its recommended route or modified it at any time. One thing about the Nuvi 57LM - you can't use a wall charger to charge it. When I first opened the box I was going to charge it on counter using a Garmin 110v charger I had from another Garmin product - gave me message on screen that it wouldn't charge. To charge it from your computer you must use the cable that came with it - a cable from another Garmin device gave me same message. I use Garmin Forerunner 305 for biking and that charger/cable wouldn't work on the Nuvi. They do include both the charging cable and a car charger so no problem.Read full review

This device definitely helps and perhaps if it were used in any other state it would get a good or excellent rating, however I am in New Jersey and the road system here is extremely confusing even for the Garmin. New Jersey has these things called jug handles and Garmin doesn't get what those are so if you want to make a left turn you have to turn right first and then left. If you don't know the area you are in then it is easy to miss that right turn which will allow you to turn left. If you miss it because Garmin says keep left then turn right then turn left, you are sol for at least another mile or more before you can legally turn around and go back. Also Garmin doesn't always tell you fast enough how you need to get way over on the other side of the parkway if you are exiting locally and not wanting the express that will go way up north before you can exit it and go back. If you don't use ezpass because you don't take the GSP often enough then the lane you have to go through is very far from the side of the GSP you need to be on after paying the toll and it is frequently difficult to get over to the side you need to be by the time Garmin tells you to. New Jersey roadways are just screwy for lack of a better word because they were built probably on old meandering cattle trails they just decided to pave over instead of on a grid intended for the automobile after its invention. So Garmin needs a special program installed in it specifically for the State of New Jersey road system that knows how to explain what it is telling you to do. That has just been my experience. I got the Garmin because I am new to NJ and kept getting lost all the time. I don't get lost as much and Garmin definitely helps me find my way back once it has allowed me to get lost so for that it is a good product. Once they do develop that NJ road system update they need to inform the existing owners so they can download it if they haven't gotten so lost by then they threw the Garmin out the window.Read full review
I have owned three of these over the years. My last one stopped working after I purchased the lifetime map upgrade and downloaded the software. So I purchased a new one and called Garmin with a question about transferring the lifetime maps from old unit to the new one. I was informed that the couldn’t do that as it stays with the device. They also recommended that I do not purchase a new map for this 11 year old model as they know the updates are causing performance issues on the older models. To Garmin’s credit they offered to send me a free Drive Smart 51 for my troubles. I’m stuck with a unit now that has outdated maps. I liked these small units as it fits well on my motorcycle and bicycle handle bars with the Garmin accessory mount. It also fits in my pocket easily. I wish I had called Garmin before buying this and taking it out of the plastic packaging. I would give it 5 stars if there was not an issue with the map updates. Read full review
