I have used GPS's before but have never owned one. I recently purchased a TomTom One 3rd Edition. The unit is very easy to use and has all the bells and whistles that one might find essential and lacks other options that are, well, "optional". The speaker is very loud at it's maximum setting and does a great job telling you which lane you need to be in (volume is adjustable). The screen is not as big as ones in the TomTom XL series but this is a good thing in my opinion as it takes up less real estate on my window (3.5" screen). The first thing I did after purchasing a used TomTom off of Ebay was to update the map to the latest map version. Updating the map was pretty easy to do. If you've ever used a computer it's fairly easy, however, this task may be more difficult for novices. After paying $35 for the TomTom and updating the map for $40 I have a somewhat brand new GPS unit for well under $100. If you plan on going this route to save some money please make sure on TomTom's website that the model of GPS unit you are buying is still be able to have the maps updated. The maps on some of the older TomTom units are not able to be updated thus rendering the unit almost obsolete. Long story short: Good GPS unit, easy to use, still functional, small screen, loud speaker, simple. I'd rate it 7.5 out of 10.Read full review
Tom Tom One 3rd Edition is a nice small unit. I used it on my way to work after I received it,( just to see how it works), and the directions it gave me were ok, not the fastest route though. It does recalculate your route if you go a different way then the unit shows which is a great feature if you are driving somewhere new to you. The volume is a bit too low and the screen is easy to see/read. Over all not a bad device.
It is ironic that a GPS system made in Great Britain surpasses one mfd in the USA. One of the features that makes the TomTom so delightful to use is that it is not necessary to "Spell City" every single time a new route is requested. The TomTom assumes the next route you seek is in the same city as the one last completed. Only if the user is seeking an address in a different city does the user need to select a new city. The options available to the user are numerous and easy to select/deselect. Connecting the TomTom to a PC is a big bonus for keeping maps up-to-date. Other users all over the world can upload road corrections/updates to the main server and are then available for other users to download. Corrections can be made to an individual's TomTom directly, stored, and available for upload at a later time. I have not yet seen a GPS system that would change my loyalty to TomTom. It is an excellent purchase!Read full review
This has been an excellent buy. I like a TomTom over other GPS units because it is practical, easy to use, and doesn't add bells and whistles that are not needed. The display is easy to use, it's intuitive and accurate. I bought a TomTom again, because the first one I owned was excellent and we needed a second unit. Never thought of getting anything else but a TomTom because I have been so pleased with the product. This is a better version with more options but none of them are "fluff" or confusing. If I were to buy another GPS, I would get this model.
I bought this to replace a One 3rd Editon I had bought new for over $300 originally! This one came with a newer map, radio receiver for Traffic plus a one year subscription, Suction mount, carry case, car charger and home charger, USB cord... for $55. It's refurbished, but seems to work better than my original Tom Tom One 3rd Edition. I couldn't be happier. I miss my Darth Vader voice though. I can pay $12 something for an Official one, but the one I had before was free and created by a community member.
