Most of the films in Elvis Presley's career fit neatly within a whirlwind formula of girls, cars, songs and who-do-you-love complications. One look at The King in the title role of "Charro!" and you'll know why this gritty Western is as different from the frothy "Elvis movies" as an Abilene Trail cattle drive is from a Miami limbo party. The Elvis on screen here isn't the clean-cut all-American ready to hit the beach or dance floor. Instead, a barbed stubble covers his face. His hat hangs low overy his wary eyes. And a knotted bandanna hides the ugly scar that marks him as a killer. The story, written and directed by Charles Marquis Warren (creator of TV's "Gunsmoke", "Rawhide" and "The Virginian"), bears the tough simplicity found in all sagebrush showdowns of good versus evil. Charro (Jess Wade) is an ex-outlaw trying to go straight- but he's got to settle when his old gang frames him for a heist. Sound like a different role? You bet it is! So different that Elvis rides off at film's end with a prisoner in tow instead of a girl. This is the West; This is Elvis; And in "Charro!". the two go together like fatback beans and coffee warmed over a campfire. Originally released in early 1969, toward the end of Elvis' acting career, he turns in a strong and solid performance. He is also joined by a superb group of performers in supporting roles. The film's taglines read; "On his neck, he wore the brand of a killer. On his hip, he wore vengeance. A different kind of role, a different kind of man." And it is, indeed, just that. For a fine Elvis movie, look no further than "Charro!"Read full review
