Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Best Selling in Ham Radio Transmitters
I believe most Hams would agree that this unit is built like the preverbal battleship. At the time Johnson was preoccupied with TV interference and the Viking 2 shows that. After removing some non-typical modifications and replacing all of the usual in a transmitter of this age it works wonderfully. Johnson used high quality parts in constructing this model and it shows in the ease of refurbishing. This particular unit had a pilot light added to the front panel and several other non-functioning modification in addition to the audio upgrade as presented in ARRL's Hints & Kinks volume six. Also notable was the addition of a muting relay and transmit receive switch along with a push to talk relay, all of these were retained. The case and front panel were in sad shape after 60 + years. A good sanding and Kennedy Tool Box brown wrinkle paint was a good repair. Front panel was a different issue the non-original yellow pilot light was remove and the hole welded shut and the entire panel sanded down. I had a local company "Paradise Graphics" produce a automotive quality vinyl wrap exactly matching the front panel which they expertly applied. The result is a Viking 2 that looks and preforms as if it just came out of the factory.Read full review
