You can spend a lot off money for a snare drum and the crack of the stick and buzz of the snares won't be any better than this Ludwig with a new batter head. I use a black remo weather king or a white coated ambassador on top. Stock bottom clear seems ok. My main sound "trick" is a felt strip two and a half inches wide under top head. Not in the middle bur one third across. This leaves you the center to hit without muffling the strike. Starting with a lower tuning gives me a meaty firecracker sound. You can always tune up higher if you like the sound of the police or maybe rush. The other important tip is to lubricate the threads of tuning rods every time you take them out. I use petrolium jelly- vasoline. Also lube the 4 screws that hold the snare strings. Especially new drums need this because they are dry from factory. I never have stripped threads or rust on these parts because of proper maintanance. Read full review
