My child is taking flute for band in middle school, so I decided to pick up a second-hand flute so I could try to learn, as well. We had purchased a Gemeinhardt 2SP from school and I picked up an Armstrong 102 from ebay. Comparing the two, the Gemeinhardt is a tad lighter than the Armstrong and the Gemeinhardt has a slightly softer key action than the Armstrong. I also noted that the Armstrong was made in the USA, which some parts of our Gemeinhardt are printed 'Made in China'. When I took my Armstrong to the repair shop to get it tuned up, the owner said he was a big fan of the Armstrong. Since I'm a beginner, I can't speak as to the tone just yet.
What I like about this Armstong flute is that it is Made In America and it is not one of those cheap Amazon flutes made in China that won't last a year. This flute is beautiful, has great tone, is well built and will last a lifetime. Its a great instrument for the beginning student. Built like a tank! You will not be disappointed.

The tone is very nice but it is almost impossible to play a low C and higher octave A.
