Franklin half-dollars were minted in the United States between the years of 1948 to 1963. The 1954 Franklin proof 50C coin is very popular with coin collectors because of its high silver content. Three different U.S. mints were responsible for minting 25,445,580 Franklin half dollars: Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver. If the 50C coin is from Denver, it is marked with a "D;" those from San Fransisco are marked with an "S." Franklin proof coins from Philadelphia are not marked in this way. The 1954 50C Franklin half dollar proof contains 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, calculated at a fineness of .900. The half dollar boasts a reeded edge, popular with mid-20th-century coin designers. The obverse features a profile of Benjamin Franklin, one of the most renowned founding fathers of the United States of America. His likeness is very recognizable thanks to a far receeded hairline and a shock of shoulder-length wavy hair that projects from the middle of his skull. Above Benjamin Franklin is the word "Liberty." Underneath the bust are the words "In God We Trust." On the reverse side of the coin you’ll se a rendering of the Liberty Bell, an important symbol of America’s independence. To the left of the bell are the words "E Pluribus Unum," which translates from Latin to "From Many, One." The motto refers to the many countries from which people came to populate the United States. To the left of the Liberty Bell stands an eagle. The words above the bell say "United States of America," and the words at the bottom state "Half Dollar.” The 1954 proof Franklin half dollar 50C coin was designed by engraver John R. Sinnock. Its diameter is 30.6 mm and the weight of the coin is about 12.5 grams. Franklin half dollar silver coins are valuable in terms of their silver content, but also for their cultural significance. A Franklin proof 50C coin in good condition can easily be worth more than either its face value or its weight in silver. Uncirculated half dollars in mint condition are easily the most valuable, whether minted in 1954 or any other year in which silver 50C Franklin coins were created. Add this 1954 proof Franklin half dollar to your own coin collection or give it as a gift to the coin enthusiast in your life.
