I am not sure why this DVD could not be played in either of my DVD players. It was a used DVD, not a new one so I called the telephone number given me and the nice lady told me that she would give me a refund and told me I could keep the old one and do whatever I thought was appropriate. I find British drama appealing, and yet, don't understand WHY I like it. Along with others (i.e. "Remains of the Day,""Howard's End"... the whole "Downton Abbey" series)- "Gosford Park" stacks up among the best. A good murder mystery in the vein of "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Knives Out." A huge cast with their characters well and engagingly presented. Gosford Park - no Downton Abbey
Didn't care for this one and I really like Downton Abbey so I was disappointed. The characters are unlikeable, lots of sleeping around although very class conscious - upper class only sleeps with the staff. I enjoyed seeing Clive Owen, but other than that, will probably never watch it again.

It also boasts a cast of unparalleled talent and experience, although many Americans would not recognize any of the actors by name or face--that's because these are British actors, many of them rarely in American movies and some of them mainly involved in the British stage. They follow a script written by a fine British screenwriter according to the vision of Robert Altman and Bob Balaban, who wanted to make an Agatha Christie-type murder film from the point of view of the servants. Director Altman, who won an Oscar for his work here, took the genre and turned it on its ear--the least important thing in the plot, really, was the identity of the murderer; the point of the film is the ... Altman researched the life by getting actual servants from the period to advise him, and the result is almost an academic treatise on how the English aristocracy lived. The DVD itself contains incredibly valuable and interesting extras, including two different running commentaries, one by the director and the other by the screenwriter. The music is fabulous and very correct, adding yet one more interesting layer to the film. You must watch this over and over to get what is being offered here, but it will be enjoyable every time.

This film takes you directly to the inner life of England's class (caste?) system. Exquisite in its careful attention to detail, the piece is a beautiful representation of the time sot so long ago when servants and "employers" lived seperately but together, sharing life with all its challenges and intrigue, but still worlds apart in material rewards and social standing. We probably have much the same arrangement in today's culture, just not as starkly black and white. Lower, middle and upper levels still exist, of course, but it seems the wealthy and poor have fewer opportunities (and less disposition)to rub shoulders on a daily basis. The film requires close watching (not a difficult task), to keep up with the sometimes subtle twists and turns of plot and ... Very enjoyable period story about life of the characters.
Like other works of Altman the character work is done so well the viewer doesn't feel the filmmaker with the story telling. His characters are shared in a world that's 'normal' for the story time period. The story telling is multi-layered like life is, so it's not a simply enjoyable film to watch, it takes more work to really enjoy it BUT it's fun to watch and watch again.
