Who knew that after these phones were practically deprecated when the Nextel network went down that they would still be around and highly sought out at that. With their rugged exterior and simple interface this phone its hard to believe that they aren't worth more (not that I'm complaining). As an owner of over 10 of them, their DirecTalk feature is a definite plus for me. Being prepared begins with being able to communicate and these provide a license-free and virtually eavesdropping free environment to communicate with those you want to. The audio quality is comparable to APCO 25 and MotoTRBO digital format. The battery will last about 4-5 days on standby and about 1-2 days with regular use. One of the only drawbacks being that they only put out 1 watt of power highly diminishing the range on a standard commercial radio(4-5 watts). Nonetheless you will get about 1-2 miles of range (dependent on the terrain, buildings, weather, etc), one of the good things is that if your out of range of any of the radios on the same channel and tone, the radio will display "User Not Available" when you try and transmit. If you do look into getting these or any phone that incorporates the DirecTalk feature, make sure that it includes a SIM card that was previously activated on the former Nextel network, if not the phone will not pass the "Insert SIM card" warning.Read full review

Though no longer supported as cellular phones, the Motorola PTT phones still serve groups for private communications. "Direct Talk" is a two way communication process in the ISM band of 900mhz, by frequency hopping, thus VERY hard to be eaves dropped by others. Thus, while other groups with MURS, FRS &/or GMRS... even some HAM radio operators.... the Motorola Direct Talk phones utilize a digital carrier, which when most other crowded air ways are congested with the above mentioned modes, the Direct Talk punches through. Bear in mind, the Direct Talk is for local communication. Perfect for families in Malls, Parks, Amusement Centers... etc.

We use them at work in all kinds of conditions.Mainly we work underground repairing electric cable. Its hot, dirty, rats and roaches are watching you from the corners.Anyway we take calls from other crews and the phone never fails in these filthy environments. They get dropped sometimes in mud or fall off the hood of our trucks and still work.I like this phone its ugly but its perfect for rough work.
Good solid phone. Works well and very resistant to hard use. Gets solid reliable service where other phones will not. Mine has been in the rain without a problem. I work in a very sandy environment and that has not stopped it either.
These phones are better than any FRS. They are secure and private with reasonable range.
