The click-and-pawl Battenkill has been in the Orvis lineup for years and years. My first one was an English made reel that I saved for and finally brought myself to purchase back in the 1980's. I paid $80-something for it at the time, a 7/8 disc model. Here we are now in 2017, and I just purchased a set of these black nickle beauties, paying $90-something for each of them. Not much of a price increase over 30 years, eh? Hats off to Orvis, who knows how to market to the frugal fisherman - quality, looks, and reliability at a rock-bottom price. I still fish my 7/8, which has proven itself to be tough, tough, tough; and over the years I've built up quite a collection of both older and younger Battenkills. None, though, look as sleek and polished, in a traditionally trouty way, as these nickle-silver beauties. They will compliment a light-line cane or fiberglass rod perfectly, but still do not look out of place on 9-foot modern rods of heavier calibers. They're winners! Pros - looks, feel, precision machining, large line capacity, and a sexy click-and-pawl purr when turned. Cons - no knob for drag adjustment, and little drag range when the spool is removed and the drag setting is changed. Click reels, however, never do offer much range in the drag, and we who fish them count on our skill palming the reel or fingering the line to control the fish. Its part of the fun of fishing the clickers! Note that my review covers only the click-and-pawl reels in the series, and not the larger disc drag versions with which I have no experience.Read full review

The last spring and pawl spey reel Orvis made. Couldn’t be happier with it, it’s a great edition to my fiberglass spey rod. Minor wear through the anodizing on the palming rim on the spool, but it’s a used reel so I wasn’t expecting it to be NIB. Price was good for a discontinued reel, and it sings beautifully.

Awesome reel. My stepson gave me one a long time ago and I'm still using it. Love the click and pawl and the drag features. This new one is for the new fly rod I'm building. Great real and great price. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a reel. I recommend it, great value, and good quality.

The product listing is misleading at worst, confusing at best. Is it a Battenkill reel with an extra spool, or is it just an extra spool? Neither... it's just a Battenkill II reel. Why is the term "Extra spool" included in the title at all? Ridiculous.
