First, I must mention that these Universal horror films are quite atmospheric. To my way of thinking, that is a crucial factor in terms of their rise to 'classic' status. SON OF FRANKENSTEIN is a real classic-- one of the greatest horror films ever made. All of the sets are suitably intriguing and some are slightly disturbing... as has been noted by other reviewers over the years, the interior of the main room of the castle seems to be inspired by 'THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI'. The Monster is menacing, but the most frightening person here is Bela Lugosi's sly and creepy Ygor. In possibly the best performance of his career, Lugosi brings to a life a character who is not only physically repulsive and intimidating, but who also reeks of evil, unbridled self interest, craftiness, and deceit. A veritable fiend ! Basil Rathbone is perfect as the heir to the Frankenstein name and fortune, who cannot resist the lure of scientific glory and the chance to vindicate his father's name. Lionel Atwill is equally fine as the wise, respectable, and authoritative but still kind and (mostly) respectful Inspector Krogh. Together, Rathbone and Atwill cook up some powerful scenes. There's more, but why give everything away ? SON by itself is easily worth the price of the DVD; but you also get GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. Though certainly not as stellar as SON, it is nonetheless very enjoyable. Get it before they stop making it and your chance to own these classic films ends up in the sulfur pit !Read full review
Two classics from Universal's Golden Age of Horror are presented in this Frankenstein Double Feature: SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939) - This was to be the legendary Boris Karloff's final film performance as the creature that became an icon, with the Karloff image forever to be the face of the Frankenstein monster. The son of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein returns to his ancestral castle 25 years after his father's death. There he meets Ygor (Bela Lugosi) who urges the young doctor to continue his father's work ; GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (1942) - Bela Lugosi give an impressive performance as Ygor, in this fourth of the classic Universal Studios Frankenstein series. This time, Dr. Frankenstein thinks the monster could be cured if he had a normal brain, so with the help of Ygor, they try once again to create life, with the same tragic consequence. Sir Cedric Hardwicke is the doctor and the Frankenstein monster is played by Lon Chaney, Jr. Enjoy these two Universal classics that are far superior to the blood and gore being passed off as horror in today's culture.
