If you're like me, you grew up watching the original Star Trek in reruns and enjoying them like nothing else. It's safe to say that the most effectively exciting episode of the original series was "The Arena," a tale of man vs monster on a barren planet. Captain Kirk faced the savage Gorn Captain and little boys all over the world were hooked on Star Trek for the rest of their lives. Sadly, the masters of the Star Trek empire decided to use the Gorn more sparingly than anything else in the entire Trek universe. You'll be glad to know that this graphic novel finally manages to capture the spirit of that fantastic science fiction tale better than other treatment of the Gorn to date. Even IDW's recent Alien Spotlight: Gorn comic fails to capture the savagery of the Gorn and the epic nature of space battles like this book does. The story is set during the Dominion War that too place after the Next Generation series. Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise are attempting to negotiate an alliance with the Gorn Empire against the Dominion. Behind the scenes a militant faction of the Gorn are initiating a civil war that will ultimately have a massive impact on both the Gorn homeworld and the Federation of Planets. The characterizations of key Trek characters is well-done, but the real stars of the book are the Gorn themselves. Writers Kevin J Anderson and Rebecca Moesta even managed to take from subtle hints given in the original series to flesh out the Gorn society and biology. Illustrator Igor Kordey compliments the story with his fully painted artwork and in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology of the Gorn species. Overall this book is a great expansion of the Star Trek universe and a welcome addition to any Star Trek collection!Read full review
