If you like MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER, you will probably like this series. It has a grittier, more realistic feel than either of the American shows about female psychics. Patricia Arquette (MEDIUM) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (GHOST WHISPERER) are very attractive women with husbands and children; they live functional, essentially normal lives despite frequent contact with the paranormal. Although not everyone believes in their powers, they are consulted by the police and generally treated with respect. People who are initially skeptical of them usually become believers by the end of an episode. By contrast, Lesley Sharp, who plays the psychic in AFTERLIFE, seems stressed-out and anxious. She is on prescription medication for depression and has been a patient in a psychiatric hospital. She is rarely employed, has no close friends or romantic relationships, and is hounded by people who want her to contact their deceased loved ones. She explains that she can't do it on demand; spirits contact her, not the other way around. Sharp is perfect as an introverted woman who just wants to be left alone, but happens to receive messages that she must convey or else continue to feel the spirits' pain. Andrew Lincoln (THE WALKING DEAD) plays a psychology professor who is sympathetic toward Sharp's character but remains stubbornly convinced that she is mentally ill, not psychic. The show's focus is not on solving crimes but on exploring the psyches of the two main characters. Read full review
