This is the best distortion pedal I have owned. It's got the greatest sound. I just wish the seller wasn't underhanded and was honest about the problems it had being second hand. Never the less it is working. Don't be cheap and buy second hand. You are going to want to buy this product Brand New because it is the best for Heavy Metal. But it you can dial down the Gain to produce different types of distortion / fuzz to play Rock or Jazz. But remember it's called Metal Muff for a reason! The boost switch is also great to alter your sound so that you can melt the faces of the crowd you are playing to. You can scoop and focus your mids to stand out from the rhythm guitartist with your solos or as rhythm guitarist focus the mids for extra warmth during choruses. Yes even bass can use this as a boost switch. Sadly with me focusing more on guitar I don't have much cash for bass pedals. But if your bass is too soft over the amp just turn the Gain down and use this pedal to boost volume a little. But you can probably find much better pedals out there aimed specifically towards bass. But if you are more of a Rhythm guitartist but you also own a bass this is a great pedal for your collection! 5 out of 5 for being the best pedal for Distortion / FuzzRead full review

This pedal has two knobs and a three-way switch. No matter what position the scoop switch is in, it is easy to get good sounds out of this pedal. There is plenty of distortion with the knob at 12 o'clock. Crank the distortion up to 5 o'clock with the scoop switch on Hi, good night nurse this thing is raging. I find I have to spend a good amount of time dialing in a lot of pedals to get the sound I'm looking for. This thing provides great, straight forward metal distortion right out of the box. Used on eBay these things are inexpensive, but at $55 brand new that is a nice price also. I highly recommend this pedal.

At some point somebody decided that metal distortion was very bright, which is very different than it was early on (think Black Sabbath 4) when Marshall stacks ruled that world and metal meant lots of rumble. I have half a dozen dirt pedals designated as 'metal' and to my ear they are all too bright but that's a matter of opinion, that said, this is the best of that group. Plenty of gain, everything works as it should with no internal noise, etc. The boost function can really put the upper mids out front... My usual complaint applies to the jacks being on the sides which means you can't put other pedals as close as possible...

I picked up the Metal Muff because I have a Soviet Big Muff Pi that cranks out some monster distortion that is good for a lot of stuff I do, but isn't exactly "metal". The Metal Muff has a pretty good overall distortion sound, but like other high gain distortion, the amount of compression added to the signal takes away from the dynamic expression available to you when you play through it. I own a Fullbore Metal as well, and choose the Metal Muff over it every time because it adds much less high frequency overkill to the signal. The EQ section works well for shaping the tone, and covers a wide range of boost and cut at three set frequencies. Can dial in a pretty good scooped sound, and can push the mids for a more mid driven sound. The high boost is a nice feature to help leads cut through the din. I think for the money, it's a pretty good pedal. Will it be the end all pedal for me? I think not. I still want to find something that offers a little bit more in terms of dynamic expression that suits my playing. I will keep it on my pedal board though as it does offer a pretty good, somewhat full bodied sound for my more metal songs. Looses a lot in terms of harmonics and expression, but I think that's going to be fairly characteristic of "metal" pedals in the price range. It seems to be of nice solid construction, so I can see it hanging around for a number of years. My Big Muff is ancient and keeps on tickin'. So, if the sound you're looking for is the highly compressed metal sound, I think this pedal is worth checking out. I got a pretty good deal on mine, and am not sorry to own it.Read full review
Okay, so I've been a guitar player 30 plus years. I first started using the EHX Metal Muff with Top Boost over 7-8 years ago in front of a JCM 900 so I get the extra distortion of the pedal plus the very little bit of breakup from the amp's preamp tubes. WHAT did I discover? That with JUST the Metal Muff on through my clean channel I had a better tone than trying to use the amp's and the pedal's breakup simultaneously. What should also be said is that I've tried distortion pedals that are 3 times the price. NONE have been as good as the Metal Muff. Shredding tone, but true "guitar tone" is NOT lost!!!! In a bind, I've even had to plug straight in to the PA (broken tube amp) and was able to use the metal muff for my sound - IT WORKED!!!! This is actually my 2nd Metal Muff with Top Boost. My previous one suffered an injury. I was SO determined to not be without it, that I ordered this one to use while my first one is being repaired. Metal Muff with Top Boost, don't leave home without it!!!! Read full review
