Adrian Belew, King Crimson vocalist and guitarist for more than 25 years, creates poppier songs on his solo albums than he does with Crimson. As a session musician for many artists, from David Bowie to Talking Heads, and even Frank Zappa, Belew is a beloved sound-sculpturer with a proven resume. On Young Lions, Belew captures a sort of tribal feel to several of his songs, and David Bowie lends his songwriting and vocal talents to the album's single, 'Pretty Pink Rose' and another song, 'Gunman.' Even the album's two covers, a reprise of King Crimson's 'Heartbeat' which featured Belew on guitar and vocals on Crimson's version, and 'You're Not Alone,' the Traveling Wilburys' beautiful track originally sung by Roy Orbison, Belew delivers it with great appeal. I especially liked the way Adrian remade 'Heartbeat' and gave it a different feel with the vocal track, especially on the echoed "heartbeat" line. I rated this album good because of the quality of musicianship and the overall nice feel of the music on this disc. It doesn't sound like King Crimson, though the Bowie numbers are undeniably signature Bowie sounding, but the two styles are a good pairing.Read full review
