Much has been written about Popol Vuh's first album, some I agree with, some not so much. I found a CD version of Attenstunde but I'd love to own this on vinyl! To start with, this is a great recording, as are most of the early ones. Some reviews of this have eluded to a certain rawness or heavy handedness of the keyboard sounds. Let me just say that is what makes this so wonderful! There is also great precussion that swirls in under the wall of keyboard noise that takes things to a whole other level. This method is repeated on "both sides" but is used to great effect each time. The CD version also contains a bonus track that fits in with the proceedings nicely. There were two other bands that this reminded me of as I listened to it. The first was Cranioclast, who I am a huge fan of and have never heard anything else that reminded me of them before! I think I now have a better grasp of where Cranoiclast got their inspiration! The second band is Amon Duul which I've read their name in Popol Vuh reviews before. Much of the chaotic, spinning movement of the keyboard sounds underpinned by the rhythmic focus of the precussion brings to mind Collapsing or Disaster. This is just a great album and I can't believe I have taken so long to acquire it. I think I ended up paying $10 for this used and I would gladly pay 3 times that to own a clean vinyl copy, unfortunately you may need to tack on another $100 to make that happen. Find this, you will not be disappointed!Read full review
