After a 6 year hiatus Sarah McLachlan, or “Sarah” as her fans affectionately call her, returned to the studio to record "Afterglow." In some ways this title is fitting since the album harkens to the tuneful melodies of McLachlan's earlier work, while still at the same time coming across as much more subdued and gentle … warm and quiet are accurate descriptors. For fans of McLachlan there is much to be happy about, as she has completed a record that sounds much like her earlier work. However that is not to imply that McLachlan has simply recorded a carbon copy of "Solace" and the masterful "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy." Instead most of these tracks are softer and gentler, and mellower. However if your looking for a comparison, this album sounds most like “Surfacing” Her voice is as always unique and angelic and the production is a full sound ... glowing seems appropriate. This is great music to unwind to. The album opens with “Fallen” a moderate slightly up tempo number that resounds with the guitar and piano melodies and muted backups that define the album as a whole and remind the listener of Nina Gordon’s ubiquitous hit of several years back “Tonight and the Rest of My Life.” The second track “World on Fire” sounds the most like it belongs on her first album "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy”, and is destined for sound trackdom. The rest of the collection is a relatively diverse and there are no real weak numbers on the album, just good and very good. Existing fans will not be disappointed, however those looking for an introduction would be better served taking a look at "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" as their first foray into Sarah McLachlan. This is not to imply that McLachlan has not produced a solid effort that will please fans and the uninitiated alike … she has. This is a very good album, just not as ground breaking as her earlier efforts. If you are a fan this is a definate add to your collection. I'm a bit biased, already a huge Sarah McLachlan fan, especially for many of her oldies, but she has triumphed again with this latest album. She excels still, with reflective, thoughtful, bittersweet pains and triumphs of life, love, and relationships. With some of her usual melancholic undertones, she grabs you gently, pulling you into her tender, poetic world. You're left captivated and forever affected by her superior musical, vocal, and lyrical escapades. Praise certainly goes out to her band as well. Get ready to be carried off onto a winding path of pain, heartache, and love, only to find healing for your own life's journey. Sarah, you've done it again. An absolute FIVE stars!
The music is all great. I only wish there were more than 10 songs to enjoy.

I bought it as a chill CD to relax in my car and at home while studying for my classes and chilling out after DJing. She is an awesome singer and vocalist. I am very impressed with this CD, as I like where she took it. It has some very deep song with in it from the heart. I had wanted to buy it when it first came out, but had taken my music else where and forgotten about it until recently when I heard her on air with MSN Radio; so I bought it on Ebay. I am glad I did- excellent buy!I would highly recommend to anyone.
