After the breakthrough success of Sparkle and Fade, Everclear returned with So Much for the Afterglow in 1997. A fourteen track, including the bonus, joyride through break-ups, abandonment, loss, gain, and other up's and down's of life. The album jumps straight into Alt-Rock with the title track "So Much for the Afterglow" after a Beach Boys-esque vocal harmony. "Afterglow" is a bit more "radio friendly" than the previous Everclear albums, but that doesn't make it any worse. The album's highpoint is track two through track 7, which includes the albums four singles. I don't care much for instrumentals, so I consider "El Distorto de Melodica" the albums only low spot. It picks back up with "Amphetamine", a punk rock song that ends with a cello and a showing of Art's soft side. The Colorfinger catalogue is cleared out with "Why I Don't Believe in God", a song about Art's mom, a stand-out track on the album; not due to it's lyrical content, but simplicity. Another rock gem from Art Alexakis that doesn't disappoint. Stand-out tracks: "Everything to Everyone", "I Will Buy You a New Life", "Father of Mine", "One Hit Wonder", "Why I Don't Believe in God".Read full review
If you are interested in getting into alternative/ grunge rock, Everclear is your best path. And this CD, although 8 years old, is the way to go. Why?Every single song on this CD is memorable and catchy, but without being trite. The title track, "Father Of Mine," and "Everything to Everyone" are quite poignant. Art Alexakis, the lead singer/ songwriter of the band, writes about his life and his experiences and you can feel this very strongly in these 3 songs. Also, the last track contains a hidden song: "I Will Be Hating You For Christmas." This CD is excellent and you should pick up a copy for you and a copy for your friends!
I decided to buy this cd again because I'd lost the original copy I had. I've loved this cd for afew years it's timeless!. Honestly if I had one cd to listen to for a week I'd pick this one. All the songs are amazing and up beat sounding with some meaning behind each one. I can't say I dislike anything about it. It's just an all around amazing cd. I've gotta say compared to some of the music I listen to I like this more it's got a great sound the music is beautiful and just well made. Much better than alot of music out lately.

Previous review are very enthusiastic about this album ... I'm surprised!!! My first Everclear album was Sparkle And Fade, where the band is worried and full of energy ... Two years later they seem to be older, very older. They become happy and sunny and no more worried. I would say that I'm an Italian girl, so I don't undestand words; therefore my personal opinion is based on sensations and I only write about music, not lyrics.
