What can I say? I was introduced to Alphonse Mouzon by a college friend back in the 1970's. At that time, he was a member of the legendary Weather Report, with amazing and legendary talents like Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinal, and Miroslav Vitous. When he came out with his solo album, Funky Snakefoot, I was floored by his talented presentation. There is debate among jazz fans on what his best work was of that era. For me, Mind Transplant and Funky Snakefoot are way up there - with Funky Snakefoot barely taking the lead. But Mind Transplant is incredible in its own right, and many look at this as the best of that time. He also contributed to Larry Coryell offerings, like the Eleventh House, which is also right up there in my mind. Since that time, I had to play adult and father, so my attachment to jazz still goes back to that era. But now that I'm ready to explore my second childhood, I am enjoying finding that Alphonse never stopped growing. He's now mastered many different genre of music. He's a musical guru who has contributed to well over 100 CDs and is still going. When I look at jazz masters of the 1970's, I trace nearly everyone back to a common source - Miles Davis - either directly or by association. Alphonse Mouzon is no exception. But his personal contribution to the art goes well beyond it.Read full review
