I had the first Back Door album and it has some great stuff on it. It can be a bit intense at times but the tracks that work well are great. All three musicians are great soloist but it feels like a dual between bass and sax. At times they blend and go in the same direction then they can veer off from each other and come back and intermingle. I got this set to complete the collection of all three original albums. The second album is similar to the first but not quite as intense. And in the second and third albums we see a big of singing and other instruments introduced. For me this kind of waters down the effectiveness of the group and I think it worked best as an instrumental trio. Colin Hodgkinson has tried to keep the flag flying and released an album Backdoor Too. which is well worth getting and honours the other two sadly departed members of a somewhat unique group who's music still sounds great today.
