Lee (Claudette Colbert) falls in love with Chris (Walter Pidgeon), even though she's about to marry Larry. Ten years later, Larry has committed suicide and Lee is raising her two stepchildren. Penny, 15, has always worshipped her father and resented Lee. When Chris re-enters the picture, Lee and Penny (June Allyson) compete for his attention. The performances of Colbert and Allyson are nearly flawless. It's too bad that Colbert, age 43, can't pass for age 20 in the flashback. Allyson, 29, captures the behavior of a sulky teen, but looks much too mature. Walter Pidgeon, at 49, is the right age to play Chris, but he looks and acts older. He's so stodgy and formal that it's hard to imagine a 15-year-old, even one with obvious Daddy issues, being interested in him. The scenes between Chris and Lee are meant to be passionate and flirty, showing these characters recapturing their lost youth. Colbert delivers this impression, but Pidgeon seems stiff and weary. Has his second chance come much too late, or is he afraid to sweep her off her feet for fear he'll throw his back out? Read full review
