When I hear the term "progressive rock" I have the sudden urge to run the other way. I was pleasantly surprised when I gave this disc a listen. Tasteful guitars and keyboards, played with precision. The vocalists are used as different characters to advance the story line. A 2CD set was listenable, and, dare I say it, enjoyable. If you like Coheed and Cambria, you will enjoy Ayreon, who doesn't rock with the intensity of Coheed, but has a wide range of dynamics to keep you in the storyline.
Released in 2000 this CD is Arjen Anthony Lucassen's fourth full album release with his group Ayreon and is actually a combination of two albums. It also happens to contain my favorite guitar solo of all time on the track the New Migrator. For me Ayreon represents the highest quality sound and musicianship around. If you any interest in progressive metal, symphonic metal, progressive rock, or rock or metal in general you owe it to yourself to pick up this album and all of the other Ayreon albums for there isn't a bad one in the bunch.
