Thank goodness for the 'dear' old (also means expensive) BBC who for various complicated reasons recorded a great many wonderful bands using fine engineers and ancient, well tried valve and tape technology. Soft Machine, through most of their ever writhing formations and including personnel as diverse as Ronnie Scott, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and Karl Jenkins went into their studios many times and now we are reaping the benefits. It does'nt matter what you look like on the radio, the playing is the thing and this CD covers an early, crucial period of transition for the band as they emerged blinking from the underground of light shows and happenings via a tour with Jimi Hendrix in America to the sun drenched uplands of their own particular style of group improvisation. It's heady stuff and the seller threw in a second double CD covering the next few years to 1974! I am as happy as a sandboy with this purchase because I only ever saw them at the Festival Hall during their furrowed brow phase when Robert Wyatt did a bit, then the other three did a bit and there was absolutely no sign of a light show!Read full review
