sounding fresh as the proverbial daisy, with their signature sound already clearly resonating, 'this is what i know about being gigantic' (2001) sounds like something minus the bear could have brought out earlier this year. three of the seven tracks are instrumental, which --certainly not to the record's detriment-- serve to build the kind of anticipation & atmosphere that the band has continued to explore in their later releases. several of the tracks exhibit the somewhat ambiguous titles that the band became so well known for in their early days, which often appear to have little or no bearing on the themes explored within the song itself. all in all, this is a brilliant beginning to the career of "seattle's best kept secret", who to this day remain experimental, engaging, and are only just starting to receive mainstream adulation. very highly recommended.Read full review
