Contrary to what some will tell you, this was not recorded in LA; but it was produced by MIke Mesmith (of The Monkees), whom Jansch had met in LA whist touring with Pentangle. Nesmith brought a number of top session musicians back over to Jansch's house in Sussex, which is where the album was recorded (there's an interesting little film about it on Youtube). Although the songs themselves don't compare with the intensity of Jansch's first and third albums, these session guys - especially the pedal steel guitarist - lift this album well above the average level of what he has done since. This reissue is short on info about all this. The extra tracks suggest that they considered featuring the pedal steel more heavily than was eventually the case. They don't add much, other than a nice but short version of the carol In The Bleak Midwinter.Read full review
