Kunio Suma, the Japanese Robert Fripp, returns with Bi Kyo Ran for another album of extrapolations beyond King Crimson's Red (and, occasionally, Discipline and Islands). Parallax combines two long tracks with one even longer one... the classic 10-10-20-minute combo. The only thing that directly hurts the album is weak vocals. Otherwise, interesting guitar tones and techniques plus Mellotron (and a nondescript rhythm section) make for entertaining listening. But if Bi Kyo Ran were also hoping to capture the threatening anxiety of Red-era Crimson, then they missed the mark. ~ Patrick Little
