This album is a seminal album for the King Crimson and progressive rock fans out there. After Lark's Tongue in Aspic the whole atonal free-form prog-rock aspect of Crimson really was in full flower. The whole band displays a great sense of cohesion when tunes are played. Regardless of who sets the structure at any given time in a tune, the rest of the band feeds the rest of the body in a very effective manner. The band's confidence must have been at an all-time high to produce the music they did for this album. From what little I have read in the liner notes, the apex of the band's free-form work was reached in Starless and Bible Black. It was such an eponymous work the band appears to have lost heart in finding the flame of creativity they experienced when their work was young. This album is a crucially pivotal example of the progress of experimental/free-form rock. It is recognised in many of the new bands throughout the years of 2000 to now exactly what constitutes modern progressive rock. This album is a must-have for an serious musician and listener.Read full review
