Before there was Eddie Van Halen, (or any other of the "guitar acrobatic" bands of the 80's and 90's) there was Billy Cobham, Tommy Bolin, Jan Hammer, and Lee Sklar. In fact, many of the guitar soloing techniques that most people attribute to the classic rock bands were actually developed much earlier by fusion players. Recorded in 1973 at Electric Lady Studios, New York City, this is the album that changed my life. I was 13 years old at the time this album came out, and I knew then that I wanted more than anything to be a musician. Today the music in this album still makes my blood pump like it did so many years ago. If you have the patience required to appreciate music, try it. You'll like it.
An incredible record of talent. Tommy plays some badass rock licks in these masterpieces. Hard to believe that it was recorded in just a few days. This is what can happen in the studio quickly when you have masters of their instruments together with a plan. One of the best pieces of music in my collection and it was one of the cheapest to replace, I had it originally on vinyl back in the day. Makes a great gift. Check it out and thank me later.
I feel you should know that this man is one drumming fool. The song Stratus was all over the airwaves in 1973-4. People at that time kept asking who was that? Well here he is folks, in all his rock jazz fusion Glory.I took an old reel-to-reel tape with about 3 minutes of this album on it into a local record shop and the young girl there played it through the system loudspeakers while she held an electronic device out to sniff the sound. Damn if that thing didn't identify it as Billy Cobham and now here I am writing this review as a very satisfied customer.
I purchased this CD for my boyfriend who is a HUGE Billy Cobham fan. A drummer knows who is good and who is great, and my boyfriend idolizes Mr. Cobham. His time with Chick Corea and the rest of his career as a session artist and solo career produced some amazing rhythms. You should give this a listen... for any music lover that would like to try giving fusion an ear. Jazz/Rock fusion at it's very best!!! Right up there with Return To Forever and Weather Report. A must have in any record collection!
Cobham is one of the most progressive drummers of our generation. This is a breakthrough album, In 1973 there were very few drummers with " Their own sound" Billy Cobham leading this band and the sound of his drums in the studio was like no one else on the scene. Up until this time drummers were generally recorded in "The background" This album puts the drums square in your face and wide open (No damping of the drum heads) so the drums sound very alive. This is a rare look into out of the box analog recording and technique. It's worth owning! JD
