Blood Ceremony's first album came at a time when occult hard rock/ metal was in its infancy, with similar bands such as The Devil's Blood and Jex Thoth having just released their first EPs. The album itself seemed like coming straight from the darkest corners of the 70s. Black Sabbath riffs? Check! Jethro Tull flute melodies? Check! Bewitching Coven-sounding female vocals? Check! Occult/ Pagan/ Magick themes and atmospheres like a heavier Black Widow? Check! The overall outcome is quite enjoyable. The songs are comprised of good ideas and its moments of excellence are plenty. On the other hand the compositions themselves sound like they could had been worked a bit more and the band is trying to find its path to maturity. This maturity came with their next album, the brilliant and flawless 'Living with the Ancients'. It is that next step that leaves the listener of this debut wanting something more. All in all, however, it's a collection of nice tunes that should bring a smile on the face of fans of the bands mentioned in this review!Read full review
