Alpha is Asia's sophomore album. It focuses almost entirely on pop and pop-rock sounds and is almost devoid of progressive rock elements. Although Alpha achieved multi-platinum status in sales, it failed to meet music industry expectations as compared to the band's enormously successful debut album. The lead single, "Don't Cry", peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Alpha was certified Platinum by the RIAA on October 11, 1983. It is the last album to feature all four original members until Phoenix (2008). It was recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Canada in the spring of 1983. Alpha is dominated by the songwriting tandem of John Wetton and Geoff Downes. All the tracks on the album are written by Wetton/Downes except for "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" by Wetton only. Steve Howe, guitarist and a key songwriting contributor on the debut album, was left out due to tensions within the band. His only songwriting contribution is for "Lying to Yourself" (Wetton/Howe), the B-side for the single "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes". All songs by Wetton/Downes except "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" by Wetton. 1."Don't Cry" – 3:41 2."The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" – 3:13 3."Never in a Million Years" – 3:46 4."My Own Time (I'll Do What I Want)" – 4:49 5."The Heat Goes On" – 5:00 6."Eye to Eye" – 3:14 7."The Last to Know" – 4:40 8."True Colors" – 3:56 9."Midnight Sun" – 3:48 10."Open Your Eyes" – 6:26 "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" (generally an acoustic version) became a concert staple of Wetton's for years, in Japan, Europe, and South America, and now again in the U.S. with Asia, as Wetton often announced it 'a song from Asia's 2nd record'. Alpha, since the year it came out, has now shipped nearly 3,000,000 records. The B-side "Daylight" was also included on the cassette tape version of the album. CLASSIC ALBUM - IF YOU LIKE ASIA YOU WILL LIKE THIS ONE - REMINDS ME A LOT OF YES BUT THE SONGS ARE A MAXIMUM OF 4 MINUITES LONG - SO PEOPLE WHO LIKE SONGS THAT DONT LAST 20 MINUITES WILL LIKE IT BUT THE TRUE PROG FAN MAY FIND THE TRACKS A BIT SHORT.
I bought this album as I have recently been introduced to Asia, and I was not disappointed! This is an other brilliant album from a very talented band of musicians. This is ROCK, but isn't too heavy. The lyrics are extremelt good, and are sung clearly; the tunes are catchy; and the album covers are very distinctive. Some describe this as 'Gothic' rock - I'm not sure what that means but there is nothing 'dark' and 'mysterious' about this great music. Some of this is quite old (but so am I!) but it is not dated. My only dislike is not about the music itself, it's the fact that you hardly ever hear this on the radio or TV - I've only ever heard one track of Asias' on the TV (shame!). Try it!!!!
