This is a superb CD of Froberger's flamboyant early Baroque harpsichord music. It seems there is a lot of interest nowadays, which motivates talented harpsichordists to outdo each other. So much the better for us music lovers. A lot of music from this pre Bach era (3+ generations prior to JSB) seems to wander improvisationally and make its own rules along the way. There is a reliance on ornamentation as well. I think the reasons include the use, even active exploitation, of the old meantone tuning system. Meantone tuning may seem at first alien to the modern ear, and as if the instrument were a bit out of tune. But it is not out of tune! Meantone went out of fashion around Bach's time, but for music of Froberger's time meantone is part of the package. Hence composers often selected "sour" sounding sequences of notes on purpose to color the music in certain ways. So the "wrong" notes eventually sound "right" and you wouldn't want them any other way. This CD is an excellent place to start. I think the listener will come to want more, and happily there are plenty available to enjoy.Read full review
