This disc would be worth the price for just Chameleon. Even though The Way We Were is not of my favorite tunes,it's ok when Maynard does it. One nice feature is the new booklet with interviews with some of the performers. Also a history of Maynard's big band efforts. I can't believe Maynard is gone, but at least he left us this classic. If you know some young trumpet players it would make a great eye opener. The last track, Superbone Meets the Badman, is unique because maynard plays his specially designed Holton Superbone. It's a valve trombone with a slide. To tell the truth, I couldn't make out any strange effects during the piece but Maynard plays a kick-ass valve bone solo. If you like screaming trumpets, hard driving big bands and 1st clas solos you'll love this cd.Read full review
I played trumpet in school and even though I graduated 30+ years ago, I still love listening to old Maynard Ferguson music that I enjoyed then. I kept trying to transfer my music from LP to CD but could never make it work. NOW I don't have to keep trying. I have it and have downloaded it to my ipod and can listen whenever I want. The quality is beautiful and clear. I'm sure any trumpeter or jazz enthusiast would love it.
Maynard ar his peak. The late 60's - early 70's big band recordings were the best showcase for his musicality as well as his range. Many of us got our first tast of Maynard with this and the MF-Horn series albums. I know at least 10 current working players that say these recordings got them hooked on big band (make that 11 - me). It's no surprise that at the recent tribute concert to "the boss" Chameleon was the tune they brought out ALL the alumnus trumpet players (almost 20)for. Into big band? Gotta have this. AND the MF-Horn albums which are being released on CD now.
This CD definitely brought back memories of the 70's when I attended several Maynard Ferguson concerts. His music is still dynamic!!!
