This '95 release from Carpathian Forest marked their arrival onto the black metal scene of Norway. 5 tracks of 'black symphonic laments and hymns' before a term like that meant sell-out. This was also the bands most potent serious black metal release as Natterfrost at that time wasn't yet known for his notorious tongue in cheek style black metal of recent releases. The sound here has more in common with Darkthrone than any other band, and ambient track The Eclipse/The Raven with whispered vocals (courtesy of Edgar Allan Poe's poem Lenore) breaks things up adding texture to the material presented. Final track Journey Through The Cold Moors Of Svarttjern sounds different again, somewhere between Burzum and Bathory with a slow plodding marching beat throughout bringing proceedings to a close. All up not as original or groundbreaking as Emperor's self titled ep or Enslaved's Hordanes Land, but this is one of the better black metal ep releases out there and well worth a listen.Read full review
