Although the tracks on this album aren't as long as the ones on the first 3 studio albums, this album still has the old-style Chicago feel, and this remastered edition also includes an early version of a song later included on Chicago XI. There are some really good tracks here, including the hit "Saturday In The Park", and the two-part Dialogue. Also of note is the "jam" opener, "A Hit By Varese". The bonus inclusion of Terry Kath's "Mississippi Delta City Blues", later included on Chicago XI (his last album before his unfortunate death) really shows his bluesy soulful voice, and his guitar playing on this album continues to "fit" with the background of a band with a horn section as permanent members.
The original Chicago line up with the now missing Terry, Peter and Danny were in my opinion one of the very best super groups in rock....Period! They combined rock with jazz, much the same as Blood, Sweat & Tears, but they were much more creative with their writting. After Terry's death they slowly seemed to head in the commericial direction...less and less horn rides and more "sweet harmonies" with the commericial "hook".( I'm sure the record company marketing guys were at least partly behind this call). They still would slip in a few great songs but nothing like their first 7 or so albums...My favorites were the first five. Anyway..Chicago V is a great CD....it was Chicago's first single album and it's loaded with great tunes! There's no filler material on this album! Some of Chicago's best tunes never made radio play...didn't meet mainstream standards which seperated the casual listener from the serious music folks/musicians..Folks that understood time signatures and so forth...Anyway I guess I'm getting off track.....If you're looking for "If you leave me now" or " Your my inspiration" type tunes this may not be for you....Its much more progressive..However if you like a little more substance in your music...BUY THIS CD! You wont be sorry!Read full review
I recently purchased the ChicagoV Remastered CD. It is a perfect example of the blending of Classical, Jazz and Rock. I have been a musician since I was very young, and I grew up being inspired by these guys. This CD is exactly like having the original LP, but now I can listen to it in my car. Wow, it really brings back old memories. This remastered CD also has some previously unreleased tracks of some of Chicago's rehearsals. Anyone who is a Chicago fan, or anyone who would like to own a piece of music history would absolutely love this CD.
