This album has very tradiational bluegrass instrumentation and sound. It is far more tradiational sounding than any of the recent Nickel Creek or Chris Thile's albums, but as any Chris Thile fan would expect he adds a lot of himself to these songs. The lyrics range from funny, to sad, to very personal but always interesting. The album as a whole puts more emphasis on the instrumental music than the lyrics. There are several instrumentals in this album and generally the music is more the focus than the lyrics in many songs. Overall, this is an execellent album that all bluegrass fans will enjoy and Chris Thile fans may have to give it more than one listen before you fall in love. But I have no doubt that you will.
Chris finally goes back to his bluegrass roots with a completely new set of and totally different style of bluegrass pickers. They take bluegrass to a whole new level, and almost into a whole new genre (if that's possible). Everything from slow to fast, vocals & harmonies are imacculate, and the pickin' is some of the best you'll hear. The new, up-and-coming musicians Chris has compiled for his band (the "How to Grow a Band") are some of THE best and most skilled in the bluegrass world today, and this CD is only a sneak peak of what's to come.
I would've never known Chris Thile was so experimental and had a darker side to him - and even a much lighter side to him - if my only impression was his work with Nicklecreek. This disc portrays a naked Thile - revealing his gleeful humor, blackened demeanor, social awkwardness and musical triumph. This recording should be considered the John Lennon's Imagine of Nicklecreek's career. I loved it
