If you're under the impression that the lyrics from your favorite folk chick or fluffy girl-group typify what girls really think about, you're in for a rude awakening. Get ready for Kanary, a powerful southern California trio made up of Leslie Knauer on vocals & guitar, Mary Kay on bass, and Tony Matteucci on drums. With lyrics most aptly described as EXPOSED, it's like surreptitiously spying into your girlfriends' most private diaries, with songs about things most of us are too embarrassed to even discuss in public, while at the same time being humorous and wildly addictive! Leslie's got a seductive, self-assured 'rock goddess' voice that rivals any of her peers. She leads us through emotion after emotion, with topics covering elation, loneliness, rivalry, great sex, bad sex, spirituality, jealousy, lustful desperation and just wanting to punch that annoying roommate in the kisser. We identify. And we can't help but be relieved that there is someone else obsessing about such things... we are not alone. With their newest effort, 'PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN', it's easy to hear their growth as a unit. Mary debuted her songwriting talents with 'Hullabaloo House' and 'Lost Weekend' which are spun directly from Mary's life, and like Leslie's songs, expose the dysfunctionalities and eccentricities of typical American life in irony and humour. Leslie considers Mary her little 'buried treasure' and says she loves singing from Mary's journal as well as her own. 'You blend so well absorbing time, Prepared yourself for hell and Hell was when you switched to vodka... 'Wake up to reality, there's no smoking when the oxygen's in use.' Lost Weekend 'PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN' boasts several solid standouts in the 'HIT' category. Pay special attention to the heartbreaking 'Praying,' the inspiration of 'Two Steps' and 'Never Coming Down,' and the brutal lucidity of 'After.' The lyrical content of each of these songs coupled with great hooks, melodies and solid musicianship come together in 'PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN' to create an album of the highest caliber. Leslie explains, 'These songs are stories about our lives, loves, mistakes, and an assortment of characters that left dents in our hearts and souls.' The lyrics of the title track, 'Porno Church of the Ugly Man,' attest to this most clearly: 'I am not that desperate That ain't the drain I'm going down Sexual repulsion keeps me from Mr. Wrong Oh I'm a fucking cupcake Not in need of abuse .' Porno Church of the Ugly Man History Lesson: Leslie was born on Vancouver Island, B.C. and is a second-generation piano tuner. She has penned two top ten platinum hits with former bands 'Promises' and 'Precious Metal.' Mary comes from Detroit and played with the punk band 'Attack' & also 'She Rock.' Tony hails from Albuquerque and has played with Etta James, Paul Shortino, 'The Dogs,' 'Attack' & 'Finn MacCool.'
