BEYOND THE DOOR (AKA THE DEVIL WITHIN HER) cannot really be consider a classic in the same league of ROSEMARY'S BABY & THE EXORCIST, but I give it high marks for being the one movie from the 70's to really try hard to blend those two stories into one scare fest for the times and managing not just to imitate but actually rip-off the two classic films I mentioned before. I know this movie had a huge following in those days when horror fans, including myself, were looking for the next devil-made-her-do-it adrenaline rush and movies like this one gave us just that. After seen BEYOND THE DOOR more than 30 years since its theatrical release, I say it's still fun to watch not really because it's so scary anymore but for its silly unintentional campiness. On the technical side, the transfer of the movie to DVD it's clear & crisp, preserving the original widescreen format, plus the copy I bought is a 2 DVD COLLECTOR SET with many extra special features & interviews with the stars Ms. JULIETTE MILLS (YES -HAYLEY'S SISTER!) & Mr. RICHARD JOHNSON. First of my typos can be far more frightening than any movie so beware! When I thought about it years later I realized I never learned what exactly was beyond the door! It came out when I was too young to pick up go and see it. All of the sudden I began to recall these type of movies and went on my Ebay way to find it & others (like "Abbey", "Ruby" etc.) Let's just say for everything there is a season, perhaps BTD was scary back in 1974 or so, it is just not scary to me by today's standards or my standards for that matter! I don't know why it would be in the horror genre! Juliet Mills now she struck a chord with me because I just did not realize that "The Nanny" had ever been possessed! nor did I realize how very attractive she was back then quite a modern 70's Greta Garbo look a like but just not the kind of role I'd ever imagine her to play which she did play well in spite of the overall non-scariness of the film. Details well the mantra of the film is "the child must be born!" ok fine the child is born! no fanfare no clearly stated point as to what the big drive for this child to be born is it just lays there quite harmless looking with a deformity that in afterthought might be a parents dearest wish on some level; it has NO mouth! So the child of Satan is born and for the rest of its life is a mute? No blasphemus sub-bass evil rantings EVER? So why must the child be born we wonder to give the evil eye perhaps? So whatever build up there is is for basically nothing. Ofcourse ther is a suggestion that the boy who plays Ms. Mills son may actually be "the one" bu then that makes any sense the movie would make null and void just an incomprehensible sort of nostalgic piece at this point. Get this if you must but atleast get something on th eside that will take you where this one may not. No diss to Ms Mills at all intended I loved her! she gets big points for a sort of uncharacteristic type of casting which in and of itself did compel me to see her in this movie to it's albeit disappointing end not to mention the woman simply looks damn good in this film and her acting is ceratainly convincing enough. -Anthony BRead full review
I am a horror film addict. Horror movies get my juices flowing. I live to be scared to death. I saw this movie years ago and just had to have it. Love that I can re-live memories of old movies. It may not have the same technical special effets of the movies of today, but you can not beat the classic cult movies. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to turn back time, even for just a short time.
Wow!What an evil movie! This is a fun film to watch in the dark! It's story line is very much like "The Exorcist",only better!!I love this movie! You will too, when you see it.A wicked little film.Buy it!!:)
