I was so excited for this album because I've been a fan of Midlake for years, and I heard that they were aiming to do something different this go-round. Unfortunately, The Courage of Others is a bit disappointing to me. Almost all the songs sound the same, like slow sad grunge. I really don't have any problems with it, in fact each song is fantastic on its own, but as an album I wish there was more variation (like in Trials of Van Occupanther) as it starts to drag on after a while. I would recommend the album if you are an undying Midlake fan, or if you are partial to listening to single songs at a time.
Overall the lyrics have meaning and the music is a soothing blend of folk, alt-rock, and poetry.

This CD is fantastic and unlike their previous CDs. They have a unique sound sort of like medieval rock music but not really. The words to the songs are highly poetic and creative. This is a one of a kind group of musicians, I wish more people knew of them but I would not like to see them go main stream. I look forward to what ever is next.
