By the time you get to the finale of this well-recorded effort, with Renee Fleming's Daphne soaring in to the vocal stratosphere of this late Strauss score, you may find yourself thinking, "This is heaven." There are no weak links in the cast, but it is Fleming's show all the way, and she is more than ably supported by conductor Semyon Bychkov. The opera itself is much more accessible and basically enjoyable than such overblown Straussiana as "Aegyptische Helena," and it's presented here with style. A delight.
