I am a fan of David Cross mainly from his days on HBO'S Mr. Show and Fox's Arrested Development. I am familiar with his comedy and my friend let me borrow it before I bought it. I listened to the entire thing and was laughing enough to keep me listening through to the end of the second CD. That was nearly 2 hours later. Don't get me wrong, both CDS ARE funny but wayyyyy to long for me. His voice gets a bit annoying after a while until he does a character voice. Also, some parts didn't even seem like comedy, he just came off as very angry. Honestly, I've only listened to the entire thing about 4 times. I got wise and took a post-it, wrote down my favorite tracks and I just keep it with the CDs in case I want to laugh without listening for 2 hours. Hilarious and scathing at the same time, that's how David Cross rolls. I respect that, but just not in one dose.Read full review
Don't get me wrong, this guy has his moments where he's hysterical, but not enough to warrant a two-disc set. If you're drunk or stoned, this might be right up your alley. I don't think that public speaking is really DC's forte either. A good speaker does not say ahh umm this much. At least the guy's honest though, and admits in the liner notes that his delivery is like a guy sitting in a bar talking. There is nothing much funnier or more unique than anything I've heard anybody say in a bar either. His tirade against rednecks is worn, and he delivers his treating gays and non-whites like human beings as if he's the first person to come up with it. But if you care what he likes and doesn't like, this CD is for you.
Though littered with the F-bomb (caused by a non-stop rambling style and a little bit of booze), the message underneath it is spot on. From the hypocrisies of willingly ignorant American voters, to the infallibility of the Catholic church, to Redneck accents, David Cross hits all the bases. His absurd cynical rants about the strangle-hold that pure bullshit has on American culture are illuminating to any one who cares to listen.
Comedians like David Cross don't get enough recognition for their work. This stand up show, along with Bigger and Blackerer and Making America Great Again show blunt, truthful rants, along with dark and dirty humor all wrapped in a certain wit that hasn't been seen since Comedians like Bill Hicks, George Carlin, or Lenny Bruce. For those who don't like swearing, maybe not for you, but those who have no limits should give Cross a listen.
