i love this cd because it is quietly powerfull, like a rumbling valcano.sylvians voice haunting, searching like a lost soul, yet with the expectancy of reincarnation.his buddist beliefs are very evident in the spacial quality of movement and sound that envelopes every note and every space between.for me the cd is pure genius. a masterpiece that i shall and do listen to over and over again.
If you like your music Dark and somewhat Moody then this is for you. It’s intelligent music with an array of instruments being used but for a lot of the tracks there is that all important element that makes music of this type so intriguing for me - it has space. Space to enjoy and admire. Sylvian excels on piano, acoustic guitar and synthesisers and there’s also of course that wonderful voice of his. It’s a solo album in all but name as a host of additional musicians help to create a haunting, but yet beautiful album. Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra) plays various keyboard instruments on many of the tracks. There are many favourites for me - “Maria” and “The Devil’s Own” are both in particular perfect examples of all that I have described thus far. “Orpheus” is a little more up-beat with an orchestral arrangement and the assistance from old pal Steve Jansen (of Japan) on the drums and a flugelhorn solo from Mark Isham. “Let The Happiness In” is ironic given it’s title – it is again broody and haunting. “September” and “Waterfront” are stripped bare with minimal piano and strings – on the latter Sylivian’s voice is at it’s best. The album closes with possibly the best known track from David Sylivian’s back catalogue – a superb rendition of the track “Forbidden Colours”. 1987 only seems like yesterday – this music is timeless and incredibly moving.Read full review
This whole album is hauntingly beautiful. David Sylvian carried on the whole Japan thing after they disbanded and is still doing it all these years later. Had this album on cassette when it came out so wanted it on cd to play in the car and remind me of the good old days. Listen to it and enjoy. genius!!!!!!
As a fan of David and Ryuichi, I felt that I had to buy this album and am very glad I did, it`s absolutely beautiful from beginning to end, my favourite tracks are Orpheus and the short but sweet September. If you are a fan of either of the aforementioned, buy this you won`t be dissapointed
Contemplative vocals ....... 'Moody' mix suits me fine .... great to be thoughtful when listening to it .. would recomend to my friends
