The concept album in rock is rarely done. This album is both haunting and angst ridden. It rebuffs society and the individual within its core. It is actually a play. A rock opera in a true sense. I would even go as far as to say a punk lover would find it appealing. where he came up with the mix of sounds underscoring the music is almost perfect. it hides there until you decide to discover it. rarely does he get to use his background with the sax . maybe young americans he unleashes it more but it was designed that way. here he gently brings it out and it works. lyrically- its very good except the opening diamond dogs score intro. its a bit over the top. In other words - the love me avenue is almost comical in its 1970trappings. but you cant deny his genious here. You truly need a strong sound system to pick up his orchestration within. I beleive david had 4 great works. this one and Ziggy stardust,Lodger, the man who sold the world. David writes disgust with a passion for hope.If you hear the song candidate and its reprise- it will make the song 1984 come alive so much more so. a true 8 or 9. Havent really heard a 10 yet. rock has too many limitations for that score to exist - I believe.Read full review
Because this album was slapped together after not getting the rights to do a rock musical of George Orwell's 1984 it sounds a little slapped together. That being said it has some seriously amazing music. It's a shame that the musical was never actualized. If you want to get into Bowie, start with one of his earlier albums, then work your way towards this one.
Great Siri sound and vision version sounding terrific
