"The Bosstown Sound - All Hail the East Coast Invasion" The "Boston Sound" promotion in the late 60's in a futile effort to compete with the "San Francisco Sound" was not well received by the record buying public. The negative response to this ill-conceived hype harmed several truly innovative Boston based psychedelic bands. Among the best of these overlooked delights were the albums produced by Ultimate Spinach and Earth Opera. The Great American Eagle Tragedy is an apt title for the prematurely doomed Earth Opera. Their first self-titled release and this, their second offering, are two almost lost American East Coast psychedlic treasures. Arguably more experimental and less stereotypical than their West Coast brethren, these two albums aptly demonstrate the enduring spirit of the 60's, where out of the box arrangements and diverse subject matter pleasantly mix and mingle with talented songwriting and competent musicianship. Although I admit to being a prejudiced Bean Town-ophile, I consider the output of Earth Opera and Ultimate Spinach to be essential recordings for any serious afficionado of psychedelic music and the mind altering influences of the 60's. These works prove that not all things "far out" or "groovy" originated in the great wild west. A third release by the remnants of Eart Opera under the simplfied moniker Eagle, entitled "Come Under Nancy's Tent" (1970) should also to be sought out. If the three albums by Ultimate Spinach and Earth Opera sink the East Coast psychedelic hook, other too quickly dismissed Boston groups well worth checking out include: Orpheus, Cynara, Beacon Street Union, Eden's Children, and Ill Wind. This is an excellent record which makes,in my opinion, Earth Opera equivalent to the famous West Coast psychedelic groups of the sixties. I heard some tracks from it about 20 years ago and I could not find it easily in record stores in my country anymore. So I suppose that this record has become a rarity. It is exquisite, vocals, instrumentation, melodies, all sound so nice. The track ' Mad Lydia's Waltz' is one that you can hardly forget once you've heard it.
