This recording is my formal introduction to Miles Davis. I've been listening to Keith Jarrett for years, and Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, all the innovators who fused jazz with funk, rock, even classical orchestral modes. But I had never heard much of Miles Davis until now, and it becomes glaringly obvious with each note from Davis's trumpet, each pluck of the bass, and beat of the drum: without Miles Davis, there simply would have been no Weather Report, no Metheny, no "Headhunters" or "Native Dancer"; there probably wouldn't even be any frickin Kenny G. Miles Davis was the master of jazz fusion, the astronaut who took jazz to the outer limits of the galaxy. "At Fillmore" finds Davis in the midst of his "Bitch's Brew" phase, still bending the melodies past recognition, still pushing his younger band (which includes Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Jack Dejohnette) past boundaries they could not have dreamed of traversing by themselves. This cd reissue is a strict reproduction of the original double-lp set; therefore, the rambling, swooshing sets that were presented on those four nights are still edited down to fit on vinyl 33-1/3 rpms. Nonetheless, for this Davis newbie, "Miles Davis at Fillmore" is an excellent and exciting introduction to the jazz great, and a glimpse of what engendered everything after.Read full review
